We intend to develop the project of an online children’s book catalogue. We need to classify the entries according to different categories: age, topic, author, etc. We will include the book cover, description and keywords. User should be able to search and sort items by title, author, date added, etc.
I have tried Alexandria, but it seems a bit complicated. I also tried WordPress, but it seems it does not handle categories very well. Also had a look at Joomla, couldn’t figure it out. Should we go to the expensive and complex Filemaker alternative? Is there any Content Manager System that would do the job?
We need something as simple as possible, even if we cannot have all the featrues.
One should be able to assign one book to more than one category, i.e. Author: Dahl, Roald; Title: The Twits; Topic: Humour, Hygiene, Family… ; Age: 8+

It is important to make sure that you have the right platform to start with, a flash site is not recommended as this will make it hard / impossible to get search engine traffic which should make up the bulk of your free traffic sources. The reason for this is that the search engines can not read the flash files yet so the content inside is not added to their database.

Off Page Optimization

This is mainly about link building, search engines see other sites linking to you like a vote for your site, the more votes (links) the higher your site will rank.

You can get links from all kinds of places as discussed above submitting your RSS feeds to RSS Directories is a good start, you can also look into article directory’s, web directory’s, social bookmarking and a whole load of other stuff. This is a rather simplified version of SEO (search engine optimization) it is a lot more complicated than this but is beyond the scope of this article.

2. Article Syndication

This is a very effective method for getting links and traffic. If you use high quality content you will tend to find that the traffic is very targeted and converts very well compared to other traffic. The reason for this is that the prospect has been pre qualified.

They have found your article to be of interest to them and have read the whole thing and when they get to the end and see the link to your site for more information and have clicked it, if at the other end you are offering something else of value that complements that information they are much more likely to buy than if they have just come across your site in the search engine.

The other advantage of using article sites is that they have a very high standing in the search engines already so you are able to rank well for keywords that would take a long time and a lot of work to make your website rank for. But wait this is not all there are more benefits to article marketing:

Web Masters

Will use article sites to look for new content to post to their own site, they are allowed to use articles posted to this site as long as they include your resource box which will include your marking message and website link. So not only will you get a link back to your site that will help with SEO but you will also get traffic from visitors to their site clicking the link to visit yours

eZine Publishers

If you have done a good job of publishing quality content then you can really hit the jackpot with this one. If an ezine (online newsletter) decides to publish your article you can get hundreds even thousands of visitors in under 24 hours .

So what sites should you post your articles to? There are literally hundreds of article directories that you could choose from but the 3 biggest ones are ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com and articlebase.com.

3. Web 2.0 Syndication

There are many web 2.0 sites that allow user generated content that you can syndicate your content across these include sites like, Squidoo, Hub Pages, Wet Paint, Blogger, WordPress.com and many more. These sites rank well in the search engines on their own, but you make them perform even better if you get some links to them.

All these sites mentioned have RSS Feeds, remember the submitting to the RSS Directories trick I mentioned at the beginning well you can do this on these sites no problem, if you want to a more concise list of RSS Directory sites then I have a list on day 2 of my free 5 day e-course you can find more information on how to get this at the end of this article.

The next step would be to get a load of social bookmarking links to these pages. You should be able to get a least 50, you can get even more if you want to find them all, again if you want the list I use its on day 2 of my 5 day e-course. The other interesting strategy you can use here is a link wheel by linking all the web 2.0 pages together.

4. Social Media Marketing

You can also use methods like setting up MySpace pages Facebook Groups and Bebo pages to get traffic. As well as social networking tactics.

5. Classified Ads Sites

There are hundreds of free classified ad sites springing up all over the internet the biggest of these is Craigslist next in line is Backpage and Gumtee is leading in the UK market. This can be a good place to get some free traffic I have a rather extensive guide to posting on Craigslist on day 4 of my free 5 day e-course as this is the hardest one to post to, you will also find a concise list of “Classified Ad” sites you will find details on how to get my e-course at the bottom of this article.

List Building

The most important part of having a successful website is to build a mailing list, so that you can direct subscribers to new content and make offers to affiliate programs and joint ventures to make some extra cash if your doing any kind of paid advertising then this should be directed at building a list. Read on for the paid advertising methods chapter.

6. Pay Per Click

You can use search engine pay per click services such as Google Adwords, Yahoo and MSN to drive traffic to your website, these services allow you bid on search engine keywords and have your ad appear next to the normal search results in the sponsored section.

These can be a fantastic way to get more traffic to your website but there is another secret trick here, because you can also use it to find out what keywords convert best for your website and once you know this you can optimize your website to for these keywords.

7. Pay Per View

These are services that allow you to buy pop up ads, some of the companies that supply this service are Media Traffic, Traffic Vance, Adon Network, Clicksor, Pin Ball Publishing Network (was called Zango)

8. PRWeb

This site allows you to submit press realises that can get syndicated to media outlets like newspapers and TV stations and magazines, these need to be very professional if your not up to the task of writing it may be an idea to hire a writer for this task, as PRWeb charges a reasonable amount for a submission.

9. eZine Advertising

This involves finding internet newsletters that will allow you to advertise and placing adverts inside them this can be a very responsive and cost effective way to market your website if you have chosen the right ezine. There are different types of adverts you may offered, here are some of them and what they do.

Solo Ad

These cost approximately around $10 per 1000 subscribers and it is a standalone mailing that is dedicated to your offer only. You type out the email and they send it to their list.

Sponsored Ad

This is where you appear at the top of an article that is sent out in the newsletter with your message and link.

Classified Ad

These are usually at the bottom of the newsletter, they have less exposure and are quite cheap to purchase, despite their handy cap, these can sometimes be the best ROI (return on investment) for promoting and opted in page for your own list

10. Co-Registration

These are usually arranged by a 3rd party the basic concept is that person A subscribes to a newsletter on a website belonging to person B the whole thing is organised by Person C (the co-reg network) when person A subscribes they are subscribed to 5 newsletters at one time all on the same topic but slightly different niches of that topic to avoid direct competition.

So person D, E, F, G, H whose newsletters person A subscribed to pay person C a fee for every subscriber this can be between $0.10 – $1 per lead depending on the network and many other factors. Person C then pays person B his commission for getting the subscriber.

This is co-registration its not as responsive as normal opted strategies but the prices are a lot cheaper and it can drive huge volumes of traffic to your website and offers.

What happens when your web host has a failure and your account gets damaged or worse case scenario, the web host loses everything?

Do you run away screaming, or get angry with your web hosting company because you didn’t have any website backups? It’s a very common problem, which is so unfortunate, since it’s avoidable with a bit of knowledge and action on your part.

You should not rely on your web host to take backups for you? Unless you expressly pay them to do so, and even then I wouldn’t count on them being there for you. You can only trust what you take action on.

Check the fine print of most web hosts terms of service and they will state that they are not responsible for your data, even if it’s their fault. Great isn’t it.

So what’s the solution. Simple. Backup your data regularly.

cPanel control panels for your web hosting are the most widespread among web hosting companies. So let me tell you how to backup your websites on cPanel web servers, it’s quite labour intensive, but well worth it.

a) Go to your domain dot com:2082 or domain dot com/cpanel and enter in your login credentials. (replace domain dot com with your website of course)

b) Go to the Backup icon (will look different depending on your cPanel theme)

c) Click on the link to download the home directory backup (this will take all your files, including stored emailed)

d) Click on the individual links to download your databases

e) Click on the individual links to download your email filters or email aliases

Don’t worry about taking the full backup since that’s mostly helpful for hosting providers, the home directory backup is much better for restoration purposes.

Now do that once a week or month for your home directory (files) and everyday for your databases like WordPress, Forums, Shopping Carts, Email Lists.

You want to take a backup of your databases everyday since they change regularly, especially now with the widespread use of blogging software such as WordPress. Your content is entered online, and if you don’t backup then you have no local copies of your content.

Once you download your website make sure to keep it on your harddrive in a central spot that you are going to remember where you put it should you need to recover.

Keep at least 3 versions of your backups in dated sub directories so that you can recover from earlier backups in case any of them were corrupt or contain any broken files or databases.

To recover and restore your website backup you simply reverse the process. In the cPanel control panel, under the Backup icon, you can upload your backup file or database file and restore it.

If that all seems like to much work, to remember to backup your websites, and actually go through and download everything, across multiple websites (if you have more than one), you are right. It’s a massive job, which is why hardly anyone does it.

That’s where software comes in, to automate these mundane tasks. Fortunately there are a couple of good applications for downloading a website backup on a regular schedule.

There are a few sites out there that teach very good tricks and tips to get your blog up to speed and making money.  One of my favorites is Darren Rowse of problogger.net, this guys is a MASTER of blogging and his entire site, which is free by the way, is jammed pack with ideas on how to run a successful blog.  His site is a place you should have bookmarked on your browser and read his material.

Then there’s the super social marketer Jack Humphrey of www.blogsuccess.com who teaches ways of driving traffic to your blog by social marketing. Spending no money and using the networks to sale your blog, products and or services.  Its really a great training site but is more of a Blogging University than just a blog site.  There are somewhere between 200 and 300 Training video’s from beginner to expert.  Traffic building techniques and SEO manipulation to drive TON’s of traffic to your site.

His book Authority Black Book on the subject of social marketing was downloaded over 70,000 times and should be a read for anyone trying to make money online.  Plus its Free.

Following to many people – There are few leaders in the industry on blogging and ones that are trustworthy and honest.   Making sure to follow the correct leaders is half if not all the battle when starting to make money online.  If you follow the wrong person your success could be hindered by them and not you. Above are two respected Blog Leaders that can catapult you to a money making blog faster than you think.

Blogging is a great way to start making money online faster than anyone else. Sign up for a free blog at wordpress.com or wordpress.org – Google’s Favorite – I mean think of this, if you knew that every time you met someone they were going to give you money and recognition, but only if you drove a certain car – wouldn’t you drive the car every time you met them?

The truth is most bloggers simply make a post and expect income. WRONG! This is not how it works! You can write all the promotional articles you want, but if you’re not talking about what people care about, if you’re not hitting on the key frustrastions, desires, wants, and loves of your community, no one will read, no one will be interested, and no one will listen when you promote a product! So the first step to “starting a blog” is to do your research. Spend some unscripted time in the popular forums and social networks of your niche, and write down a list of these common issues. Make posts to ask questions about specific products, find out what people love and hate, and what they WOULD want in a product. You will often find, many products are simply lacking in a couple ways. This is your in. You can then create short videos or articles solving these problems, and even package your articles/videos together and use it as a BONUS if someone buys from your affiliate link.

Here’s another thing unsuccessful bloggers do: they are not honest. Look, the Internet is old enough for almost everyone to know that people promoting products on blogs make affiliate commissions. This is not a bad thing, but if you’re not upfront and honest about it, you’ll be seen as dodgy and get less sales/conversions. It is important that you do not simply promote anyting, just for the commission. Promote a product because you’ve tested it and truly believe in it. Know what you’re talking about before you post. It’s incedibly important to actually do research as a blogger. In fact, writing is not the majority of your work. It’s all about connecting people with problems to the right solutions.

After you’ve done your research, get your hosting and domain by going to Host Gator and typing in the code “1cent” when you get the option. The first month will cost one cent. Then go to wordpress and find a good theme for your blog. You can type in “premium wordpress blog” to get some good themes, or choose a free one that looks nice. Make sure you pick a theme with advertising space and a prominent “Subcribe to My RSS Feed” button at the top. Now it’s time to get some plug-ins. Basically plug-ins are little additions to your blog which increase functionality, use, and value. They are important. Do not skip this step.

You can read their descriptions by searching for them at wordpress. Here’s the list: All in One SEO, Google XML Sitemaps, Askimet, PHP-Exec, MaxBlogPress Favicon, WP-Cache, Auto Hyperlink URLS, Sociable, TweetMyBlog, Statpress SEOlution, GoCodes, What Would Seth Godin Do, and Popularity Contest. By the way, all these plug-ins are completely free. You can have a lot of fun finding great plug-ins for your blog.

The next step will be writing your content. How often should you promote products? Certainly not every post. I’ve found that about one post out of every 3 to 5 posts can promote a product, and people tend to respect that. It takes a lot of time to write articles, do research, and be a good resource, and your subscribers will happily listen when you promote products that they know will actually help them out. The process to sales is know, like, trust, buy, so remember to provide real content and value, and only promote good products. Contact the product owner and see if you can get a special leaked report or chapter of their ebook for instance. These little bonuses build your credibility and your readers will love you for it!

First off I want to say that I am fairly new to internet marketing but have been making a full time living online and see a promising future as I work towards my goals. I am totally committed to succeed at this and will not give up on my dream.

After months and months of trying to verify for myself I have become pleasantly surprised to find out that people are out there making a living as bloggers.
Most bloggers create their own personal or business blog to post personal opinions and views or promotional information.
Professional bloggers, however, do make money using their own personal blog.
If you are interested in learning how to make a living as a blogger, consider this information before you get started.
If you decide that you would like to use your own personal blog in order to create an income there are a few things you should know. One method bloggers use to make an income blogging is by using partnerships with advertisers. You can easily form a partnership with an advertiser, using programs such as AdSense from Google or Yahoo advertising or MSN. When you create an account with using something one of these tools, you will be giving the advertiser permission to advertise on your blog.
