I told my boss I would design him a web page because I wanted to learn web design and he wanted a web page. I work 4 hrs a day in exchange for a place to stay, but this work is generally gardening outside. Somehow there was a miscommunication – he can’t pay me for extra hours I spend on the web page and he needs me to work outside most of the time. Leaving me about 1 hr a day to work on his website.
I am kind of a newbie at the whole web design game – I am learning as I go. But I have a working knowledge of basic programing & coding and, in my opinion, a good eye for web design. So it might take me a while to read through the tutorials on html or css, but what I produce is high quality.
So at first, I said I wanted to do the design thinking it would count as my work hours. I put in 6 or so hours a day to compensate for my inexperience. But then he tells me I have to work mostly outside and since he saw how hard a time I was having maybe I could count 1 hr of work on the site per day. I spend like 5.
So anyways, I show him my first design that was heavily based on a template thinking we could be done with it. But then he rips me a new one, “ah the navigation should be over here” “oh this color is ugly” “your website caused my computer to completely crash” (I don’t believe that one.)
So taking all this criticism back to my workstation, I scrapped everything and started from scratch (when I still thought this counted as work! ha, just kidding!). I spent about 7-10 hours on the new design (once again, a lot of this is learning time too!). I show it to him, and he pretty much tells me to go back to the other one that he had had so many problems with.
So now I am ready to just quit! Or give him the one I have right now. Gah, why should I have to make it your way if I am doing it for free?
Now that the full situation is explained I want some input from people who design small business web pages like this (it’s about 7-8 pages – whenever he makes up his damn mind) and I’m going to integrate a WordPress blog into the design when I finalize it.
So if you were given this project and had to redo it several times because you have “bad” taste, how much would you charge your client?
I just want an accurate answer so I can know weather it’s worth it to ask for money, or quit doing it, or what?! Opinions welcome too, please and thank you :)
Online Network Marketing Business Transformation Video Series | Day 3, Installing WordPress
My father is…old…and he runs a successful small (very small) business. His site is currently some shabby looking site made by a “template creator” since I didn’t have time back then to work on his site.
I have my own site which I’ve coded entirely with HTML and CSS, as I prefer learning the code to make different things happen. I wish I had more time to learn other languages and get my web design skills where they ought to be. I’m very very good at HTML and pretty good now with CSS but I’m not much of a visual designer; I prefer the challenge of taking someone’s design and making it real (whether I can or not).
In any case, my father wants to be able to update/change/design his site without me, and I’m not sure exactly how to make a setup like that. I hear of CMS things like Joomla, Drupal, and WordPress but I’ve tried figuring out Joomla on a whim and I always got stuck before I see the bigger picture of how to do things.
His site only really needs a good visual design and some pages for text/pictures/a RARE audio or video posting. There’s always a POSSIBILITY of using ecommerce, but I dont think he’s looking towards such a big change in business style. His sales are mostly done through referrals and with larger corporations/schools, so he doesn’t normally sell to individuals. Anything he does/would sell he uses eBay just to get rid of some old stuff.

So I have a client with a site on Yahoo! Small Business and got me to design it better since they don’t know much about designing one. So I plan to put WordPress to their site with jQuery and style it with CSS. I want to know is Yahoo! S. B. a host with a control panel, database & FTP? does it support WordPress? did my client just grab a template from it?
My Yahoo! hosted WordPress blog has been down for over 30 hours [http://andfaraway.net/]. It says:
“Error establishing a database connection. This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at mysql. This could mean your host’s database server is down.”
My email is running perfectly fine, and I can access the FTP, but I can’t access mysql or any of the other blogs under the same domain. I have tried calling Yahoo! customer service, but they put me on hold for over an hour, and as I live overseas, I can’t afford to pay more money on listening to hold music. I have also emailed them and they didn’t reply.
Any advice..?

Over the summer, I would like to start an online business. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I am limited on cash for the start-up however. I have two ideas that I think have a lot of potential. Which idea should I choose?
1. A website where users can submit original songs (with copyright info for protection) and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat with users. Users could also create a main page where they could post info, and find new band members with the band member finder. I would have contests throughout the site for users to enter. I would make money from selling ad space. Joining the site would be free, but if the site becomes big enough, i would add a pro membership where you get extra features. I think this idea is great since there is not much competition other than www.purevolume.com, and it would be a great way for bands, artists, and musicians to promote themselves and get feedback. Who knows, maybe a record label executive might wander around the site and find some hot new act. They could be the next big thing. The only problem with this site is that it would cost me 40-50 thousand to create using a web design firm. I just dont have that kind of money to spend right now. How should I go about creating the site? I have no coding knowledge. Should I hire a coder/designer/developer from elance or something like that? What would that cost? Would it be effective. Should I create the site with dreamweaver or drupal or wordpress?
2. My second idea is a website where users can list, sell, buy, auction, and trade websites. Sign up would be free and a user could list the website with info, and place a snapshot of the site. They would choose to either auction, sell, or trade the site. Once they sell the site, I would take a small 4% fee from the final sale. I would also sell ad space on the site. This site might be easier to build than the music site. However, i got quoted 30-40k to build the site from a web design firm. Again, should I hire someone from elance or something?
Which idea do you think is most profitable? Which idea should I do? How should I go about building the website?
PS. To earn extra money, I am signing up as a dealer for Kaeser and Blair, which sells promotional products to companies (pens, golf tees, merchandise with company logos on them). As a dealer, I sell to my clients, and make 25-50% profit on all sales. Kaeser and Blair takes care of manufactureing and shipping.

Are you looking for hosting services for your Internet business? If you visit any hosting website, you will probably come across a comparison table, offering all the different hosting packages side by side. At a glance, you should be able to see the difference between the various hosting packages, and that will make your buying decision easier. However, if you are new to web hosting, you may find some of the features unfamiliar, and you are not sure how those features are going to help you building your Internet business. Hopefully, this article will help you. In general, you will see two different types of servers in the market – Windows based servers, and Linux based servers. These are operating systems, and they differ in terms of performance, features, and pricing. Since Linux is an open source operating system, you can expect Linux hosting to be more affordable. Features wise, it all depends on the programming language you are familiar with. If you are mainly going to upload static HTML pages, then you can use any type of server you want. But you are going to use PHP as your core language, Linux servers would be a better choice. Modern Windows servers do support PHP, but they are initially built for Windows programming languages only. Therefore, they are more ideal with Windows based programming languages such as classic ASP or ASP.NET. Dot Net is Microsoft’s latest framework, and developers are warming up quickly to this powerful framework. Many popular online software such as forum software, blogs, and content management systems are available for free on the Internet. Linux servers even come with the popular Cpanel control panel, which allows you to install numerous applications for free without any technical knowledge. For instance, if you want to set up a WordPress blog, you can easily install WordPress on your server with just a few simple clicks. Many Internet business owners prefer Linux hosting because of Cpanel. It allows them to install additional software easily, at no extra cost. Hence, they save on software development costs. Windows servers also have a rather popular control panel known as HELM. Using the control panel, you can add new websites, manage domains, add POP email accounts, subdomains, etc. You can do all that without having to email your hosting company. You can even install your own databases from the control panel. Linux servers usually offer support for MySQL database, while Windows servers may offer support for Access Databases, MySQL databases, and MSSQL databases. One frequently seen question in hosting forums is, “Which is a more reliable operating system as a server?” The best answer to that question is that both are reliable servers, but the reliability of the servers depend on the experience of the server administrators. Under the skillful hands of highly experienced server administrators, both types of servers can be very stable and reliable. So don’t just choose based on the operating system. Remember to learn more about the people behind the hosting services as well.
