Hi all,

I’m thinking of trying my hand at web design as I’m ok with html/css etc but I was wondering how web designers get their clients to edit their own pages. I tried installing WordPress (so they can use the UI there) on a local server (Xampp) but I find the service a little too blog-orientated. Anyone know of simple/free visual HTML Editors/FTP which aren’t too daunting for the non-technical minded.

Thanks.

http://www.superiorsoundco.com/wordpress/

It’s loaded in the right folder, I’ve got it in the HTML:

Does anyone know a possible reason why all my other images show up correctly but my banner image doesn’t?

Here’s the CSS:

#banner {
margin: 5px 0px 0px 115px;
}
html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/brown_theme/images/banner.png

I just tried the full path and it still doesn’t work

Okay, I’m stumped and literally seconds away from raising my white flag! I’m hoping that *you* will be able aid me in the creation of my personal blog and… um, the preservation of my fast dwindling sanity.

So, I’ll try to keep this as clear and concise as possible… basically, I have registered my own domain and I would like to create a personal blog. I *do* have basic HTML/CSS knowledge but this is something completely new to me and definitely OUTSIDE of my expertise!
I would like the general layout of my blog to be similar to www.galadarling.com’s layout. No, not exactly the same – I have no intentions of “copying” her work but I would like it to be laid out in a similar way!
I have absolutely no idea how to integrate WordPress (is that the best content management system?) into the website… and I am desperate for ANY help!

But, please, don’t suggest to me that I should open an account on LiveJournal.com, Blogger.com or any of the other online blogging websites because I have my own domain and I would like to keep it that way!
Thank you in advance!

hey to whom is reading this,
i like to know what does it take to make a website like; www.ugo.com
i am looking to start a website with friends to reviews stuff like games & gadget and love the UGO.com layout ( i know they are a big Company and hire hundred to designer), BUT i just wont to know what kind of stuff they use like scripts, plugins ect.
I know a lot about wordpress so that not new to me but is there anything else some would recommend for review website , more powerful tool or should i just design website from scratch using html, css , ect. my goal would be something like ugo.com

Thanks in Advance

I recently added a logo to the top of my companies website. We use WordPress. I added this code to the header.php file:

And this is style.css:

.logo-img { /* Top Logo – Shane */

display:block;
position:relative;
padding: 30px 0px;
text-align: left;
}

Our web address is www.pursolsolar.com

I so appreciate any help you could give.
Awesome! It worked. Thanks so much. I opened another question that I’m sure you could figure out in .1 seconds if you’re interested. Thanks again.

I am a graphic designer and wanted to merge into web design. I know XHTML and CSS and know how to tranfer photoshop designs into dreamweaver as well. I also know a little bit of flash. I have recently heard that many people are using wordpress to create website, I did try to go thru there and its a little overwhelming there are so many tutorials and so many different methods of doing things its just to much. Then there is php….really… more code is that necessary?? I just got lost! I can build a functioning site without php but do you really need to learn to get it to the next level? I wanted a easier way to integrate ecommerce so I wanted to add a shopping cart and pay pal but it uses php, right? So do I have to stick to informational sites. I wish I could have continued school! argh

I’m installing the Thesis theme for wordpress on my new blog and want to put a border around my content.

Reputed bloggers Matt Cutts (www.mattcutts.com) and Michael Gray (www.wolf-howl.com) both use the effect I’m interested in on their sites. It’s the black box border around the page and the padding away from the top and bottom that I’m after – exactly like they’ve done it.

Do I need to manually edit my custom css file or can I get this effect in the Thesis options somehow? Or even with openhooks perhaps? Bit of a newbie question but my tragically non-existent familiarity with Thesis means I can’t copy the effect without some detailed instructions from a smarter person please!

My friend asked me to redesign her website because her previous designer really messed it up and she’s counting on me to improve it.

Problem is, I know a lot about HMTL, CSS and stuff like that, but I don’t know how to start with a website. The site is already up and running, but how do it access its codes? How do I edit it??

She’s using WordPress and her server is my-websites.com..Do I need to log in somewhere with her account or what??

Argh please help!

I cant figure out how to upload the thing automatically. I have the .zip file and an uncompressed version on my desktop. Nothing happens when I try uploading the .zip file. it appears but its just in archive and I cant do anything with it in my file manager. Now we I add a folder in my theme section and then start uploading each .php, .css, etc file that is in the uncompressed file manually, they upload and I see that it works sorta for wordpress. But there is like a 1000 things for this theme I and I have to do it 1 and a time if I do it manually. That would take forever! So how do I get the entire folder added?
Then why does it say you can only upload a .zip file in the themes section in wordpress? I just saw a couple of tutorials where they bought themes from the same place I did and have the same hosting as me and they uploaded there zip files just fine.
Well that is what I mean. I am not going through word press. I get hosting through ipage so I tried to upload the .zip file into my file manager in the wp-content/themes section. I dont understand how to upload the entire file. I uploaded the .zip file and the only option I have is to download is again to my desktop. But i do not need to do that since I already have it there so it makes no sense to me. When I manually added stuff from the folder into a folder I created it works for word press. But there are too many files in the folder to do it manually. So that is why I need to know how to upload the file automatically to where it has its own folder. When I upload it now it is just some archive thing and not a folder of its own.

so I dont know how to butcher this in the right way…

SCM Music Player – seamless music for your Website, WordPress, Tumblr, Blogger.

Congratulations! Your SCM Music Player script has been created.
Please paste the code into you HTML template, right after the tag.

so what is the ‘body’ then?

I’m thinking about starting a blog, but I’m not sure which site to use. I’ve heard of the main ones (blogspot.com, blogger.com, wordpress.com, typepad.com etc), but I don’t know much about any of them! (I’m currently leaning towards blogspot)

I have a few requirements for my blog:

1. It must be quite customisable. I know HTML and CSS and a fair bit of web-design stuff, and am happy to use them to customise my blog. I’m not just talking about choosing between preset themes, but having the option to REALLY customise my blog.

2. I need to be able to post images, and perhaps also embed youtube etc videos.

3. It must be a free site – I don’t have the money to pay!

4. I don’t want all the space on the page to be taken up by adverts. Obviously, I expect there to be some adverts on a free blogging site, but the fewer the better!

5. I would like it to have good inbuilt tools, for example, to allow other users to comment, subscribe, etc, and certainly some way of archiving posts.

6. If there’s a way of making money from the blog, all the better!

7. I’m not at all keen on using myspace!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Here’s the deal:
1) I have a 1998 Dell PC w/ Windows98 that crashes about 6 times a day, that has a non-working CD-Rom drive, and which has a broken printer and won’t accept any other printers. Should I get a new computer (hopefully laptop or notebook) or upgrade in order to build a website/blog on my own?
2) I started a WordPress.com freebie blog and now want to buy my own domain and build from the ground up–how easy is it to move my current content to the new location?
3) I’ve never done any website design but have started learning html through free tutorials on the web. Do I need to learn all the programming stuff first (i.e., xhtml, CSS, etc.) or can I learn as I build?
4) I have a disability which prevents me from carrying things (have to use a walker), so I need a computer light enough to go into a backpack, but effective enough for website building. Any suggestions for laptops or notebooks for $1200 or less?

I have a blog (in wordpress) and I want to border my pictures like in this posting:

http://www.greendaily.com/2008/01/16/house-of-representatives-is-going-green/

Does anyone know how I would add this kind of border in html coding? I know it’s a lot easier in CSS, but I’m not ready to upgrade my account yet.

Thanks alot!
Thanks a lot you guys!! I’m all set I think. You were all a great help!

Hi.
I have developed an application with Google Maps API (not currently live so I can’t link to it). The application was developed in JavaScript and PHP and has the function for users to login and store information on a MySQL database (all made using Dreamweaver).

At the moment is fully functional but it is not presentable. I could design a site and make everything look nice using CSS and publish this to the internet – all using Dreamweaver….but this application will only form one section of the website. I would like to have other pages on the site that my colleagues can edit with ease (they do not have access to Dreamweaver, nor are they technically minded).

Am I right in saying that an opensource CMS like WordPress does not have the flexibility to support my application? Would I need to use some sort of online website builder with the functionality to display my app in an iframe?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I’ve learned XHTML, CSS, Javascript, and Java (fairly)… I’m designing a Java program to help me update the news section on my website by spitting out the HTML code. Is there a way to design a program that could access my news.php file on the web server and change the HTML code (and inject the code at the right place) at a click of the button?

TITLE – DATE

The program will spit this code out and fill in the variables according to what I specify in the text fields with the “Generate HTML Code” button. Now, I want to be able to click another button (or maybe run some type of a script) that injects this code into the HTML file just before the last code that was injected.

Any ideas as to where to start?

Additional information: I have tried setting our page up as a blog; after many attempts, I’ve come to the conclusion that my host is missing something (or has something turned off) that blogs need in order to work, as they were all buggy upon fresh installations. (I couldn’t even access the admin panel in WordPress! I’d get a white screen.)

I really want to start a website or Blog on cooking, but whenever I look anything up it’s full of blog lingo I don’t understand. I’m pretty good with basic HTML, CSS and just computers in general. I’m open to even pay for hosting since I really want to take it seriously, and not just someone who decided to start a free blog for the heck of it. I’d really love some advice on websites to use (I’ve heard WordPress or Blogspot) but I don’t understand how to host on those even. Please help!

Ok, so I’ve never coded before, and I’m trying out html and css to learn about it. i have this text that’s bold and i don’t see why. Ok, so the code is far from perfect and the page is a mess, and the profile information is not done that well… i’m still working on it though, ok? ^^’ Anyway, why is the text next to that table in bold, and how do i unbold it?
here’s the exact source i’m using the code in http://coppernight.chatango.com/

and here’s as much of the code as i could fit in Y!A’s character limit (yes, i’m aware many parts of the code are dead. I’ll take care of that later, i’m only concerned about whatever’s making the text bold at the moment):

(this is the paragraph that talks about how i’m a zelda fan)

BACKGROUND="http://teenymanolo.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Link.jpg" BORDER="3" CELLPADDING="8"
CELLSPACING="1" table style="filter: alpha (opacity=50);" font color="green">

(ok, there’s more to the table code, but i’m out of character space for this question. You get the important parts of the table code though)

Zelda Game Titles (excluding re-makes) Progress
The legend of Zelda 5/9 dungeons completed The Adventure of Link No Progress

All right, so this video (angrily) explains the Zelda timeline theory. I’m not against trying to put together a timeline, and if I ever manage to own and beat every zelda game then I’d probably make a timeline myself. However, this video does have good points about how crazy the timeline can be, and I agree with it.

This video is pretty old, being from 2006. Most of it was correct, but there’s a few things I’d like to adress.

1. He says that Twilight Princess has no generally accepted spot on the timeline. Now that the game has been out for a while, timeline theorists generally place Twilight Princess sometime directly after Majora’s Mask, following the child timeline. At the end of Ocarina of Time, child Link visits Zelda and they have a talk which causes the fate of Ganondorf to be much different than it was in the Oot adult ending. It’s a generally accepted theory that Ganondorf was arrested and put on trial, as seen in a flash back in Twilight Princess.

2. In the video, and I’m aware that he’s joking but I’m going to address this anyway, he keeps mentioning how he can’t believe “A Link to the Past” isn’t a prequel because it has past in the title, and even focuses on the name trying to find out what it means. While this could hold some clues and relevance to the plot, I wouldn’t focus too much on that. The original Japanese title

Hi,

I am working on two blog pages for a friend. On her computer, which is perfectly square (and her monitor is larger than mine), we see the background images of these two webpages just fine. There is no black, empty space. However, on my laptop, which has a rectangular screen, the background image shows up as if it isn’t big enough, and there is a lot of black “empty” space on both edges.

Here are the two pages:

www.shiningartist.com

www.bestviolinlessons.us

I guess it depends on what kind of monitor you have? But what do I change in the CSS to make sure that the wallpaper takes up the entire background, regardless of the monitor size? Btw, this is a wordpress site.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I told my boss I would design him a web page because I wanted to learn web design and he wanted a web page. I work 4 hrs a day in exchange for a place to stay, but this work is generally gardening outside. Somehow there was a miscommunication – he can’t pay me for extra hours I spend on the web page and he needs me to work outside most of the time. Leaving me about 1 hr a day to work on his website.

I am kind of a newbie at the whole web design game – I am learning as I go. But I have a working knowledge of basic programing & coding and, in my opinion, a good eye for web design. So it might take me a while to read through the tutorials on html or css, but what I produce is high quality.

So at first, I said I wanted to do the design thinking it would count as my work hours. I put in 6 or so hours a day to compensate for my inexperience. But then he tells me I have to work mostly outside and since he saw how hard a time I was having maybe I could count 1 hr of work on the site per day. I spend like 5.

So anyways, I show him my first design that was heavily based on a template thinking we could be done with it. But then he rips me a new one, “ah the navigation should be over here” “oh this color is ugly” “your website caused my computer to completely crash” (I don’t believe that one.)

So taking all this criticism back to my workstation, I scrapped everything and started from scratch (when I still thought this counted as work! ha, just kidding!). I spent about 7-10 hours on the new design (once again, a lot of this is learning time too!). I show it to him, and he pretty much tells me to go back to the other one that he had had so many problems with.

So now I am ready to just quit! Or give him the one I have right now. Gah, why should I have to make it your way if I am doing it for free?

Now that the full situation is explained I want some input from people who design small business web pages like this (it’s about 7-8 pages – whenever he makes up his damn mind) and I’m going to integrate a WordPress blog into the design when I finalize it.

So if you were given this project and had to redo it several times because you have “bad” taste, how much would you charge your client?

I just want an accurate answer so I can know weather it’s worth it to ask for money, or quit doing it, or what?! Opinions welcome too, please and thank you :)

i am gathering info on setting up my first blog – so far, it doesn’t seem difficult – YEA [having watched a tutorial], but i would like to customize the look of my blog using my own pics for background…so my question is:

if i am using a free template, will i be able to delete the default background, pics, colors and add & edit in my own – without having to bother w/CSS code [which seems like what they used to call typesetting]..?

also, it seems as though there are only TWO free blog tools on the planet – wordpress and blogger[that everybody uses] – are there others that you find better with more design flexibility [or better templates] – i’m looking for a high-style, contemporary design w/eyepopping color – and more user-friendly? i found one but that comes kinda close but its in spanish…so if you use or know of any good ones lemme know

ok – THANKS A-BUNCH!
luvya
